Hello my name is Lee Shertzer, and I’m the managing director of Stewardship Advisors in Mount Joy, PA. Planning is often an overused word. We could be planning for a day or a week or a life; we could be planning for some event in the future like children or education; could be stopping or slowing of our work life; or just planning for a trip.

Well, we have a trip coming up. I do not know if this has ever happened to you but recently I woke up at 4 in the morning wondering if I had planned for everything for a long trip that my wife and I are taking. This trip is on a boat and we will need to prepare to be self-sufficient for most of it, providing our own power, water, and food. It feels like we are stepping off into the unknown.

Did we plan enough for our everyday needs? Did we plan enough for the unexpected things that will certainly come up during this time: sickness, injury, and unexpected storms?

Since this is new to us, we felt it was important to find someone to help with our planning. Someone that has helped many others plan for this kind of trip. Then it occurred to me that this is similar to what our clients are going through when they come to us looking for help planning for their future journeys. They want someone to walk with them as they plan, someone who has successfully helped many others as they have stepped off into the unknown.

Now, one of these areas of planning the clients is for the last third of their lives – sometimes called retirement. We like to break it up into three timeframes. It first involves planning for the Go-Go years when they want to be active in maybe international travel or helping family or volunteering. Then it is planning for the Slow-Go years when it may be more local travel and focused time with grandchildren. Lastly, there is planning for the No-Go years. These are much less active and might involve planning for care in a nursing home or care by family.

Whatever you are planning for your working years or your non-working years it is often helpful to have an experienced guide to walk with you on your journey. If you were thinking about planning for some of your life’s adventures, just contact our office and we can talk about your desires for your life as well as preparing for the storms that might come.
